3 Tips for Everyday Cockroach Management

No one's looking forward to a German roach infestation this season, which is why we've provided these steps you can follow to eliminate roaches of all kinds from your home in the Long Island area.

German cockroaches are extremely common throughout the United States, and they're bound to take up residence in your home at some point if you're not careful. They're the perfect stowaways that can infiltrate your home through boxes or even grocery bags, and they proliferate at a shocking rate. And the German roach variety is especially good at it, light-tan coloration and about 1/2 inch long, they can lay up to 40 eggs at once in their egg casing, called ootheca.

American cockroaches are also a primary culprit to watch out for, with their huge size, 1/2 inches long, and reddish-brown coloration. Both species molt while they grow, shedding their exoskeletons, create a terrible musty smell in the house, and leave their egg casings around, which can trigger allergic reactions, and they contaminate all the food sources they nibble at during the night with diseases and even stomach worms.

We've got some of the best household solutions to get rid of roaches and eliminate roach populations from the cracks and crevices of your home so you can peacefully enjoy the holidays this season and restore your peace of mind.

Getting Rid of Cockroaches

1. Control Cockroach Entry Points

Most cockroaches are small enough to wriggle their way through the tiniest cracks in your home, so it can be tough to eliminate all possible entry points in your home. But every little thing you can do to keep them from coming inside will help you reduce one more place they could be coming inside.

Gaps and crevices on the exterior of your home can be found around doors and windows, along foundations and sill plates, and around utility pipes. Even the spaces in aluminum siding can be a natural entry spot for a cockroach.

Since cockroaches lay multiple eggs at a time in their ootheca egg casing, and because cockroaches are hardy and can weather almost any harsh condition, their populations can explode if they have access to food and water, which is why it's so vital to block every access point they might find in your home.

Weather stripping around your home and door sweeps on all the doors with outside access can make a significant difference in the number of pests in your home. Also, make sure all shed and garage doors close completely and seal well when shut.

2. Sanitation

Food Sources

Cockroaches can survive for months without food, which is one reason for their success in almost inhospitable conditions. They eat everything humans can eat, especially greasy and starchy foods, vegetables, meats, milk and dairy products, and fruit. The most disgusting things roaches will consume are things like human waste, fresh or dried blood, fingernails, dead skin, hair follicles fallen to the ground, other insects, dying cockroaches, and a number of other things.

It's essential to make sure roaches don't have any food to live off of, not even a nibble here or there, or they could keep coming back. Plus, if your food is inaccessible to them, then what reasons do they have to go into your home in the first place? Place all your food in containers with an airtight seal and place them on a high shelf to make it even harder for them to access it.

Never leave food out, even little crumbs, and never eat food anywhere other than the kitchen so that you can control precisely where all the primary food sources are located. Clean the entire kitchen before and after meals, and make sure no crumb is left behind. Consider purchasing special garbage bags with a seal. If not, be sure to empty the garbage bins every day so that you don't have any garbage sitting around at night when roaches are most active.

Make sure your yard is clean as well, without any fallen fruit or vegetables. If you compost, place the pile on a platform at least 20 feet from the house. Consider ways to make it roach-proof by covering it with a tarp or enclosing it with mesh that insects can't access. Also, make sure your outdoor garbage container is at least 20 feet from your home and has a lid that tightly seals.

Usual Harborages

Make sure to find and clean all the usual roach hiding places so that they don't have a place to breed, leave their feces, or discard their molts. Their survival instincts are so strong that they will do anything to make sure they are hidden, even at the expense of food and water. Plus, the feces, molts, and musty smell they leave behind can cause allergic reactions if they aren't cleaned. Just remember to wear personal protective equipment when cleaning or looking for roach evidence.

Even if you've only seen one cockroach running around and you don't think you have a significant roach problem, you'd be wrong to believe that a daily sanitation regimen won't help or won't be worth it. Cockroaches have a strong instinct to hide, especially during the day. If you see one running around somewhere, the only reason is that all the best places are entirely filled with cockroaches, and the one you saw happened to get kicked out.

Look for their best kitchen hiding places in pantries, cupboards, and utility cupboards with leaky water pipes and make sure all of these places are thoroughly scrubbed clean. Other hiding places include the kitchen appliances: under, inside, and around refrigerators and freezers, ovens, stoves, toasters, microwaves, blenders, food processors, mixers, bread makers, and other appliances. Clean each item thoroughly because even the tiniest, burned food crumbs will entice a cockroach.

Roach Leavings

  • Eggshells, called ootheca
  • Discarded exoskeletons
  • Fecal matter
  • Musty smell

3. Kill Roaches

Plenty over-the-counter chemicals and products are available for you to help completely rid your home of cockroach infestations This includes boric acid, insect growth regulators, diatomaceous earth, and gel bait with bait stations. Look for these in your hardware store or garden and farm supply store locations.

Insect growth regulators are one of the most effective roach killers out there because they prevent the cockroaches from growing into adulthood. It also inhibits the adult's ability to reproduce, so this product is excellent for an infestation of any size.

Boric acid is an ingredient in a number of products used around the house and deals devastation to anything with an exoskeleton. It usually comes in a dust form, which is then lightly applied to areas where you know cockroaches usually hide, but be careful not to put them in places where children, pets, or the elderly could come in contact with it because it could be harmful to them.

Diatomaceous earth acts like a combination of glass and kitty litter because it attaches to the roach's exoskeleton and sucks the water out of them until it dies of dehydration. Because roaches can live for anywhere between ten days to three weeks without water, this solution is considered more residual than boric acid.

Gel bait and bait stations often can be found in roach killer kits that you can purchase online. Bait is an excellent roach killer because it doesn't alert them that it's dangerous until it's too late for them to do anything about it. They nibble on a little bit of it, thinking they've successfully gotten away with a snack, and then perish sometime later.
