4 Problematic Ants In Your Home

Few ants are as universal and invasive as the ant. They’ve wriggled their way on almost any continent and every climate, including the North Pole! Besides continents, they find their way into your home. At best, ants are a nuisance. At worst, they contaminate food, destroy property, and can even bite or sting.

This spring season, look out for these four common types of ants in and around your house and look to the professionals to help you get rid of them.

1. Pavement Ants

This type of ant is incredibly common and highly invasive to homes. With nests occupied by multiple queens, these ants can become incredibly numerous and find their way into any residence.

True to their name, these ants are often found in cracks in pavement or gaps between rocks while scavenging for food.

Common ways to prevent pavement ants from getting inside is to seal all food, including pet food, in airtight containers and keep the house clean. Ants aren’t attracted to dirty homes, but they are attracted to leftover food and fallen crumbs.

2. Odorous House Ants

True to their name, these ants create a nasty smell when crushed under a finger or when stepped on. These are much more common than pavement ants and, because of their colony size, are much more difficult to eradicate without professional help.

Odorous house ants, like most ants, are omnivores. They eat everything from cereal to trash or the food off the plate.

Since these ants often have multiple queens and hundreds of sub-colonies, getting rid of these ants is extremely difficult. They tend to spread like mad throughout the house. Luckily, professionals know what to do about them, so don’t hesitate to call for help.

3. Crazy Ants

Along with their long legs and twitchy way of walking, crazy ants also get their name from their unique ability to leave their forage lines to look for food on their own, and your home is the best place to find their favorite protein or sugary snacks.

Crazy ants don’t just contaminate food, though. Also known for making hundreds of nests inside the wall voids, crazy ants have a tendency to pile onto electrical wiring of TVs, computers, and even toasters. Because of this strange tendency, crazy ants can cause a massive amount of destruction.

Even though crazy ant colonies can also have hundreds or even thousands of egg-laying queens, they can make their homes inside the walls without fear of discovery for years. Treatments on your own can be frustrating and a waste of time, so be careful when confronting ants on your own.

4. Carpenter Ants

With their huge jaws that they use to tunnel into wood, these ants are probably the most damaging of all ant species. Even though they don’t eat wood like termites, carpenter ants are still able to tunnel through just about any house, causing thousands of dollars in repairs.

Although they typically have only one queen, carpenter ants are also difficult to eradicate from a home. This is because the queen usually makes a nest somewhere outside the home and sends workers with eggs and larvae to forage for food inside your house.

The difference between carpenter ants and other ant species is mainly in size. While most house-invading ants are about 1/8 inch long, carpenter ants are closer to 1/2 inch long, making them one of the larger ant species that invades homes.

The Difference Between Carpenter Ants and Termites

  • Ants have a thin waist. Termites have a thick waist.
  • Ants have an elbow bend in their antennae. Termite antennae are straight.
  • When winged, ants have four wings of the same length, but termites have four wings of equal length.

Ant Control

As mentioned above, many homeowners spend a lot of time and energy to get rid of ants but end up without good results. Although there are plenty of products out there that can help — including diatomaceous earth, insecticide soap, and many others — the best choice is usually to call the professionals.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
