5 Tips for Preventing Termites

1. Trim Bushes and Trees Away from the House

Even the thinnest tree branch or sparsest leaf pile could increase the risk of a termite infestation, especially if they are touching the house.

Bushes should be spaced at least three feet apart from each other. Trim bushes at least one foot away from the house so that branches don’t touch the siding.

Cut any tree branches that overhang the house or touch it. Tree limbs should be trimmed back five feet to ensure they don’t lean above the roof and potentially drop any termites on it.

2. Clean up Plant Debris

Make sure to clear away any leaves, fallen branches, or other plant or wood debris as soon as possible.

Deep wood mulch can also pose a problem, especially if it’s piled directly next to the house. Deep mulch can maintain certain temperatures and moisture levels that are ideal for termites.

In contrast, shallow mulch that is as dry as possible can reduce the risk of an infestation. Keep mulch shallow and dry and rake it at least 6-12 inches away from the foundation so that if it is infested, your house is less at risk.

3. Maintain Proper Water Drainage and Repair Moisture Damage

Check all the water drainage areas inside and outside the house. Start inside by checking for leakages in the faucets, toilets, washing machines, drains in the sinks and showers, and water pipe access cabinets. Repair any leakages and water damage you find right away.

Start on the outside by checking that all the downspouts drain away from the foundation and that the water doesn’t drain toward the foundation or pool anywhere in the yard.

Next, ensure all the gutters, drains, and spouts are completely free of leaves and other debris. Termites release flying swarmers every year that start new colonies and a cluttered gutter is an excellent place for them to start, especially Formosan termites.

4. Stack Firewood and Lumber Away from the House

Although keeping firewood piled against the house can be convenient, it also presents a significant termite risk. Termites could easily infest the wood and enter the house without being detected.

Pile firewood and lumber at least twenty feet from the house on a metal platform raised at least one foot off the ground. It may be a good idea to cover the wood with a tarp or plastic covering as well, but just make sure to keep the wood as dry as possible so as to keep it from attracting termites.

5. Call the Professionals

Although these steps will help make your home less enticing to termites, it won’t stop termites from coming and infesting your house if they’re determined.

Most people’s first instinct when facing an infestation is to treat it on their own. They use low-risk products like boric acid, termite bait systems, and diatomaceous earth to fight against the colony. However, these efforts are often not enough, especially against a large colony that has set up shop in the walls of your home.

We don’t recommend trying to treat termites on your own. Many people who try to get rid of termites on their own end up wasting time and money and have to seek professional help anyway. You’ll want to find someone you can rely on to prevent any problem from happening and get rid of any existing problem.

Fox Pest Control can be that company for you. Our Pest Pros are well-trained, but they don’t just kill termites. When you call Fox, you’re joining a family that cares about you, your home investment, and your peace of mind, so call us today.

If you think you might have a termite problem or want to prevent one, think Fox Pest Control. We get the job done right the first time. Because No Bugs is Simply Better.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
