Groundhog

How to Identify a Groundhog Problem

Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks or whistle-pigs, cause dig tunnels and holes in your yard or garden. Identify these creatures quickly to determine if you have a problem.

These creatures hibernate during the winter and emerge to mate during March and April. Groundhogs will give birth to litters of 2-6 babies at a time. Because they hibernate during the winter, they keep two different burrows. The winter burrow is hidden away in a safe location where they can hibernate without being disturbed, usually in the woods somewhere. Groundhogs don’t eat during the winter, but survive completely on the fat they stored during the summer. The summer burrow is nearest their favorite plants. They are solitary when they aren’t mating or rearing young and spent most of their time alone in their summer burrow.

Physical description:

  • They grow to be 18-24 inches long, weigh 4-14 pounds, have brownish fur, and grow a long tail (about 7-9 inches)
  • They are members of the ground squirrel family, but they are more squarish and stockier than a typical ground squirrel
  • They have sharp claws they use for digging.

Identify a Groundhog burrow

  • Entry points are usually holes in the ground, 6-12 inches wide
  • Tunnels can be 6 feet deep and have numerous chambers for food storage, sleeping areas, waste disposal, or nesting chambers for a brood.
  • The holes are usually close to their favorite plants. You may see burrow entrances or tunnel tracks near your garden or plant beds.

Why you might have Groundhogs

Remove Shelters

Some folks have firewood, dense shrubbery, or other sources of shelter where groundhogs can safely begin a burrow without being disturbed. Keep firewood piles far away from your home, at least twenty feet away from your home, garage, or shed.

Remove Food Sources

Groundhogs are herbivores, so we suggest keeping your yard clean of every kind of dropped seeds or fruit and all other plant clutter, especially in the spring when male groundhogs are searching for a female’s summer tunnel system to mate. Harvest all your winter crops on time and do your best to clear up any fallen vegetation during harvest.

Favorite groundhog food sources includes starchy, high-carb, and fatty grains, vegetables, or fruits. Peas, beans, corn, alfalfa, and similar crops are some of their favorites. Clean these, and other fallen berries, seeds, or fruits, as much as you can from your yard and garden to prevent your own Groundhog Day.

Reasons to Treat your Ground Hog Problem Immediately

These rodents cause damage and many other problems to your property. Professional groundhog control options are essential to get rid of groundhogs. They can chew on underground wiring, water pipes, sprinkler or irrigation pipes, electrical pipes, or even gas pipes and cause damage. They claw and chew on trees. But worst of all, they eat valuable edible plants in your garden and dig giant tunnels throughout your yard and garden.

Groundhogs rarely bite. If you are bitten, go to the hospital and consult a physician immediately.

Although live trap options exist for groundhog removal, we recommend you not try to catch a groundhog on your own. Wildlife technicians know how to safely remove groundhogs from your home. Call today to safely and quickly remove your groundhog problem.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
